Trumpism's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of several weeks, the nation's leader started showing the public his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have risked – truly, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the world' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the leader try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, since in theory Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, specifically for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your coat you should give them your pullover too.
The apparent and clear fact that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a type of profound affection focused on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
So I have been inspired to see the steadfast resistance against Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to help build the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in numbers during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.
