Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
