"When are you chatting with the band?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just one problem: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're not alone. Multiple high-profile fans have publicly petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their music videos frequently feature them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to start a band."

"Therefore all is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics follow breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international audience.

However the band will always be their primary focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
