Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
